The Iowa Veterinary Referral Center is pleased to have some of the most compassionate and talented doctors in the veterinary profession on our team, who want nothing more than to provide quality animal care to the residents of central Iowa.


Dr. Stanley Wagner, DVM, MS

    Dr. Wagner earned his DVM from Purdue University. Following graduation he completed a surgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He spent twenty-three years performing surgery at a university hospital and has spent the last two years practicing in Des Moines before joining the Iowa Veterinary Referral Center. Dr. Wagner has extensive experience with orthopedic, soft tissue and neurosurgery.

Dr. Christine Adams, DVM, MS

    Christine Adams was born and raised in New Jersey. She moved to Ames, Iowa in 2000 to attend Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Iowa has been home ever since. She received her DVM in 2004. She went into a small animal general practice in Council Bluffs, Iowa for almost 2 years. She completed a 1 year internship in small animal emergency and critical care at Iowa State University from 2006-2007. She then completed a 3 year residency in small animal emergency and critical care medicine at the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Specialty Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 2010. She has a special interest in sepsis/SIRS, oliguric renal failure, and ventilation therapy. Not to mention talking about herself in the 3rd person. She is married to Russell Adams and they have 1 dog and 4 cats.



Dr. Sinisa Grozdanic, DVM, PhD, Diplomate ACVO

    Dr Grozdanic obtained his veterinary degree from the University of Belgrade, Serbia in 1998. Following his basic veterinary education, he obtained his doctor of science degree (PhD) in the field of neuroscience (2002) and finished his clinical veterinary ophthalmology residency in 2007 at the Iowa State University (ISU). Dr. Grozdanic was an assistant professor and staff ophthalmologist with the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at ISU (2007-2011). He is also currently serving as an ophthalmologist with the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Specialty Center in Cedar Rapids.

    Dr Grozdanic published 25 manuscripts and one book chapter in the field of glaucoma, neuroprotection, autoimmune retinal disease, ocular imaging and stem cell therapy for blinding ocular diseases. He also gave more than 50 national and international presentations on advanced diagnostic and treatment modalities for different eye diseases.

    Dr. Grozdanic also has the distinguished honor of being the first veterinary ophthalmologist in North America to perform artificial corneal transplants in a veterinary patient and he has developed numerous novel diagnostic and treatment routines for different canine, feline and equine ocular diseases. He is actively consulting for US Department of Defense and Secret Service canine units, and he also provided free consulting to more than 80 veterinary ophthalmologists from 6 different continents on more than 300 complex veterinary ophthalmology clinical cases.

    Dr Grozdanic performs all complex extraocular (eyelid and corneal surgeries) and intraocular (cataract, glaucoma and vitreo-retinal surgeries) procedures. His special interests include early diagnostic modalities for glaucoma and retinal diseases, advanced medical and surgical procedures for treatment of glaucoma, endoscopic ocular and orbital surgeries, laser therapy for different ocular diseases, special therapies for autoimmune retinal diseases, and stem cell based therapies for blinding ocular diseases.

    Dr. Grozdanic will be available for appointments every Monday & Tuesday, and will provide most advanced medical and surgical ocular care for veterinary patients in the state of Iowa.



Dr. Janet Olson, DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology)

    Dr. Janet Olson completed her 3 year cardiology residency program at the University of Minnesota - College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Olson is the only board certified veterinary cardiology specialist in private practice in Iowa and is thrilled to be able to serve you and your pets.










Dr. Kristen Holm, DVM, DACVD

    Dr. Kristen Holm graduated from the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995 and completed a residency in dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1999.












Dr. Roxanne Jacobson, DVM

    Dr. Roxanne Jacobson graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. She worked as an associate veterinarian at Ankeny Animal & Avian clinic just shy of 11 years before getting interested in emergency medicine. She appreciates the opportunity to help clients and their pets. She prides herself in educating clients to help them make informed decisions regarding their pet's healthcare and wellbeing. She is married to Jeff Jacobson and shares her home with a pointing Labrador and a cat. She enjoys painting, woodworking and stained glass art in her spare time.






Dr. Carolyn Stafford, DVM

    Dr. Carolyn Stafford graduated from Iowa State University with a BS in Biology in 2002 and the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. Following graduation, she was employed as an associate veterinarian in a Des Moines private practice for over 2 years, and then began working in emergency medicine. She came to work at IVRC when it opened in March 2011. She is a member of the IVMA and AVMA and lives with her husband and their growing family.
